The lives of three families all inhabiting the same house are explored in intertwining stories. Then in the wake of an anti-abortion ruling in the 1970s, a teenage girl (Murphy) finds herself pregnant and alone, having to deal with a distant mother and an abusive, alcoholic father. Then in the present day, a workaholic set of parents (Fiennes, Blanchett) must reevaluate their priorities when their son (Muniz) attempts suicide.
