INVADING REDEMPTION

LEGEND: By the year 2028, overcrowding in prisons had reached a critical level. A solution was proposed by a government agency in need of cheap labor: send the worst prisoners to space to build a new research space station. This solution, called Project Redemption, met with resounding success when it started in 2042. With no chance of escape and hearing rumors of terrible brutality, prisoners feared being sent to Redemption.

ANDREW KALE stands in front of a judge, flanked by two guards. The judge sentences him to three consecutive life terms for the murders of his son and pregnant wife. His sentence is to be served on Redemption.

Kale is sent to the space prison on a shuttle along with 49 other prisoners and four guards. He makes tentative friends with another prisoner, TOBIAS GAVIN, who is as annoying as Steve Buscemi on crack. Kale asks Gavin why his uniform has a blue arm band instead of the orange (signaling murderer) that almost all of the other prisoners have. Before he can answer, they arrive at Redemption.

As the prisoners debark, one of the guards from the shuttle introduces himself as MICHAEL SKYLER, the assistant warden of Redemption and the man in charge for this six-month rotation of guards. The prisoners are lead through the prison, which is a strange mixture of industrial and ancient styles.

Meanwhile, back at Spaceport (the Earth-based control center for Redemption), there's a power anomaly and several sectors lose power. GENERAL WESTING, the warden of Redemption who just returned to Earth from his six-month rotation, is called in. Before the investigation gets underway, power returns and nobody is able to determine the problem.

Back at Redemption, Kale is put into his cell. The cell block consists of a row of clear plexiglas cells. You can see all the prisoners from one end to another. Kale sees another newfound friend, a huge man called BULL, being placed into the cells next to his and calls out to him, but Bull doesn't hear him. He turns and sees his neighbor on the other side, a woman named ARIEL ALLEGRA, doing chinups. He smiles, admiring the sight for a minute. When he mutters something to himself about having a room with a view, she stops and glares over at him and notifies him that she can hear him. The cells are in pairs with each pair sharing an air vent. Skyler's voice comes on over the loudspeaker, notifying the prisoners that they have an hour of 'dark' to allow the new arrivals to adjust. Suddenly the clear cell walls turn an opaque silvery-black, except the still-clear doorway through which the prisoners can be watched by guards in the Pod, the central guard station.

Alone in the dark cell, Kale lays down to try and rest. After a few minutes, he hears voices coming through the air vent. It's Allegra and Skyler. Allegra's worried that Kale will hear them but Skyler says he checked on him and he's asleep. Then Allegra quietly scolds Skyler for returning to Redemption. He jokingly asks if she didn't miss him. She says that she did, she's just worried. Skyler reassures her that they were just dreams. She tells him what worries her is them both having the same dreams. He shushes her and they kiss.

Outside, in deep space, there's an alien vessel. Panning around, it shows Earth far in the background. It disappears, then reappears, much closer to Earth. In the Pod, it shows on a screen, but Skyler isn't at his post to see it.

Later, the prisoners are taking their shower. Sorry guys, it's all male prisoners. Two big dumb brutes head toward Gavin and start to harass him about being a "blue band." Bull moves in to defend Gavin and he and the two brutes end up fighting. Guards break it up, dragging Bull and the other two off to Solitary as Gavin cowers.

Outside, the spacecraft closes in on Earth, undetected. General Westing is in the middle of demanding answers when a pale blue-white beam of light envelopes Earth, coming from the alien craft. Everyone immediately loses power, including Spaceport. Westing is concern and that concern multiplies tenfold when a controller informs him that they've lost communication with and control over everything in orbit. Westing asks about the "thousand suns" and is told that yes, that includes Redemption.

However, Redemption was just outside of the alien weapon, which was an electromagnetic burst of energy that renders everything electrical, except organic material, useless. It doesn't harm people but it does throw them back to the Stone Age. The space station continues to function as normal. In the cafeteria, Kale catches Allegra and tries to question her about what he overheard going on in her cell. She blows him off.

In the Pod, the system suddenly loses contact with Earth, setting off a red blinking light. The guard on duty, MAX, glances at the display of Earth and watches the night-side of the planet go entirely dark as all the lights go out. He sounds an alarm through the headsets of all the guards, telling them to take positions outside the cafeteria, surrounding the prisons. The standard procedure for any emergency situation. Skyler bursts in to find out what's wrong. Finding out that communication with Skyport has been lost, he decides to go to the communication tower to try a secondary system. Once there, he spies the alien vessel and sounds another alert. He watches in horror as the vessel attaches to Redemption.

By now, the prisoners have noticed that something's amiss. The guards have closed in on the exits and are very alert, almost jumpy. Kale tries to talk to a guard but is threatened and told to take a seat. When Skyler comes through on his way back to the Pod, Kale tries to intercept him. Cornered and quite a bit wigged out that there's a spaceship outside that he doesn't recognize as belonging to any human organization and unable to contact Earth, Skyler signals the guards to ready themselves and breaks the news to everyone: they're being invaded by unidentified hostiles and they've lost contact with Earth. They lock the prisoners in the cafeteria, sealing the doors, and Skyler tells the guards to take defensive measures. Max watches from surveillance cameras as the aliens bore a hole in the hull of the station and send in SCOUTS, mechanical spider-like things that crawl the walls.

Skyler heads to a power room to activate a defensive grid, though it's designed for a prison riot and not an invasion. As he heads to manually set a sector that isn't responding, he suddenly drops to his knees and puts his hands over his ears. Images flask like memories mixed with graphic pictures of dead bodies littering Redemption. The security camera on him cuts off to static, but Max doesn't notice, he's watching in horror as the scouts swarm the halls and slaughter the guards they come across.

In the cafeteria, the prisoners are in an uproar. Kale finds Gavin and pumps him for information about the station. See, Gavin has this way of remembering every detail of everything he hears, sees or reads and when Redemption opened three years ago, he'd watched a two-hour Discovery Network special on the prison. He sketches out a rough map of the prison and tells him that the Pod is the central nervous system of the entire place. Kale asks where Solitary is located.

With the basic idea of the plan in mind, Kale gets the other prisoners organized and focused, giving them a pep talk. He's sending one group to the Pod, one group to the communication tower to keep trying to get through to Earth and the rest of them will try to get to the docking bay to see if they can find an emergency shuttle. Kale grabs Gavin and Allegra to go with him to get he guys in Solitary, not wanting to leave anyone to be sitting ducks for whomever it is that's taking over the station, especially since they could use Bull's strength at a time like this. They still think it's a human force.

They finally bust the doors open and come face-to-face with a corridor full of scouts. You can almost knock most of the prisoners down with a feather, they're so shocked. The scouts burst in and start tearing through the prisoners. Kale, Gavin and Allegra make a run for it and are somehow overlooked in the chaos, being some of the few who make it through. They run into another hallway, trying to outrun the scouts.

Westing is back on Earth and in almost as much of a panic as the people trapped on Redemption. He's talking to the Secretary of Defense and is delivering bad news. Their backup systems aren't working and they can't figure out what's wrong. Nobody has power. There are flashes of people all over the planet, getting out of cars that just stopped working in the middle of the road, lights going off all over the world, people hitting battery-operated radios, etc. Westing tells the Secretary of Defense that they've lost Redemption, and the weapon housed within it. Worse yet, without their system being online to guide the refueling freighter to the station, Redemption will run out of air and power in just over three hours.

Kale and the others find Solitary and bust out Bull. Allegra, who knows the layout of the station fairly well since she's been locked up there for two years, agrees to stay and get the others out. Kale, Bull and Gavin go ahead and clear the way to the docking bay. They leave and race down the halls. Kale fills in Bull on the invasion. They come across a weapons locker and Gavin tries to find a way to get it open as Kale and Bull look further down the hallway to make sure it's clear. Gavin hacks the system and turns to call to the others but finds that a clear plexiglas wall has come down when he opened the locker and triggered a localized defense mechanism. He bangs on the wall and shouts, but Kale and Bull don't hear him. They pause to argue about the best route to take, not noticing Gavin behind them. Gavin freezes and turns, finding himself face to face with a scout. The scout jabs a steel-like leg through Gavin, killing him. The glass slides upward as the scout lands on a release button as it moves away. Kale and Bull turn to look behind them and see nothing but Gavin's dead body.

They grab weapons and keep running, funning running into Skyler who is holding his head in pain, kneeling in the middle of the corridor. He asks about Allegra as Bull and Kale help him to his feet and half carry him along. Skyler tells them they're going in the wrong direction. Kale tells him that they busted out of the cafeteria and are trying to find an evacuation shuttle. Skyler tells them it's no use, there aren't any. Redemption is a good paying gig, but you sign away your life. He mutters that it's like a classified suicide mission. Kale asks him why he chose the word classified when that's usually a military term.

Skyler pauses, then admits quietly that he thinks he knows how to fight the invasion. He tells them that they aren't human, which Kale had already figured out. He thinks he knows that they're after. Only he, Westing and the government know. The research station they're building is also a weapons storage facility, built out in space so they can get around a UN weapons guideline. In the construction of the station, there's a cache of weapons, codename: the room of a thousand suns. Only he and Westing can access it. In there, there's a prototype energy weapon, similar to the weapon the aliens used. They must have detected the test shot they fired off just before Redemption opened.

Allegra and the other seven prisoners from Solitary have found the docking bay, but none of the other prisoners heading there seem to have survived. She screams for Skyler, but there's no answer. Ripping a guard's headset unit out of the supply cabinet, she tries to contact Skyler. A signal gets through, then cuts out. Allegra turns to find an alien right behind her. Not a scout. A real alien. It's huge and metallic, similar to something out of the Fifth Element mixed with Aliens. She stares at it and something in her face changes. She gets visions similar to Skyler's and then smiles and tells the alien that she'll lead it to them.

The research station isn't finished. There aren't walls through most of it and there's no atmosphere or gravity so they have to suit up. Kale and Bull help Skyler into a suit and they tether themselves to the station to keep from floating off. They get to the area with the locked door and Skyler opens it, using voice print identification and a retinal scan. They're barely inside when Allegra's voice comes over their headphones, calling for help. She thinks she's the only other survivor. She's crying and scared and lost and begging for someone to answer. Skyler asks where she is and tells her where they are. He wants to go after her, but Kale stops him and reminds him that they're running out of time. They work on arming the weapon and wait for it to turn on as Skyler tries to lead Allegra to their location. Bull suddenly floats by them, dead. They turn. Allegra and the alien are right behind them and Allegra's smiling evilly. Skyler asks Allegra what she's doing. She looks over at the alien, smiles and looks back, her voice shifting slightly to a more mechanical version. She's entirely under the influence of the alien. She asks him if it's just like the dreams he had. He says no, that in his dreams, she's always dead. She laughs, asks Kale if he's dreamed lately, maybe about his dead family. He closes his eyes against flashing images of the murder of his wife and coming to with a knife in his hand and blood everywhere. She tells him that they've both been played, that the aliens are in control of them. They made Kale kill his wife and son as a test. Funny that he'd end up on Redemption, which was their target all along.

The aliens have been working on a plan for nearly two years. Without the energy weapon, Earth is helpless against them. It's the only thing that can damage their mechanic shells. Kale asks why they didn't just destroy the weapon. The alien, speaking through Allegra, answers that they want to control it, not destroy it. Kale glances down. The weapon is almost fully charged and has already been aimed at the alien ship.

Kale moves to hit the switch and fire the weapon, but Allegra tries to stop him. They fight and Skyler pulls her off Kale, accidentally disconnecting her breathing hose in the process. Allegra ends up dying. The alien is too big to fit inside the entrance so has called scouts to it. They crawl the outside of the station, heading for them. Kale and Skyler manage to fire the weapon just in time, destroying the alien ship and causing the scouts and the alien to all lose power. They're all basically dead. With the ship destroyed, Earth regains power.

Westing orders a ship up to Redemption to bring home any survivors. As Kale and Skyler get back inside and collapse onto the floor exhausted, there's a shot of the alien floating into space. Its "eyes" open and the lights in them turn on.
